Full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University Complutense Madrid.

Senior Investigator and cofounder of the Center of Astrobiology (CAB, INTA-CSIC) associated to NASA Astrobiology Institute, until 2012. From 2004 to 2011 has been deputy Director of National Bioinformatics Institute, Spain (INB). He is expert on biophysics, systems biology, computational biology, molecular evolution and origins of life.

From 1998 to 2003 was Manager of the Science Area of the UCM Summer Courses at El Escorial, Madrid, Spain. From 2000 to 2004 was appointed as Deputy Director General of the General Foundation UCM and Director of the Science and Technology Courses.

Appointed as Director General of University Policy in February 2012 and Secretary General for Universities, at the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports,  from September 2012 to February 2015.

Postdoctoral experience in the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Department of Chimie Physique II, directed by Prof. Ilia Prigogine, supervised y Prof. Albert Goldbeter. Postdoctoral stays in USA: University of Southern California in Los Angeles (Profs. Michael Arbib and Christoph von der Malsburg); and University of California Irvine (Prof. Gary Linch). From 1996 to 2012 formal continuous research collaboration with Prof. John Ross at Stanford University as a Visiting Scholar; He participated as Associated Researcher in National Science Foundation (USA) grants and NATO Collaborative Research Grants.

Undergrad Teaching activity at UCM mainly involved with subject of Biophysics. Coauthored the textbook “Biofísica: Procesos de Autoorganización en Biología”. Graduated teaching activity on Systems and Computational Biology. From 2003 to 2012 codirected the UCM Master “Bioinformatics and Computational Biology”. He has directed and participated in different courses of the European School of Theoretical Biology, in France.

Continued research activity in the Biophysics Group, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I at UCM, in the field of Theoretical and Systems Biology. He has been Principal Investigator in successive competitive grants, both national and internationally founded (Spanish National Research Grants, European Research Framework, Regional Grants) on subjects such as: complex systems dynamics; artificial neural networks; metabolic networks; molecular evolution and origins of life; molecular dynamics. In the CAB directed the Molecular Evolution Lab and conducted research on pre-biotic evolution and cell origins.

Published more than hundred reviewed papers (JCR) in the main journals of the area. Edited several books. He has continuously been involved in multiple activities of science outreach. He is member of the main scientific societies in his area, i.e. foundational member of the Spanish Biophysics Society. He has organized and chaired both national and international scientific congresses, workshops, and meetings.
